Last year, LG released the LG G Pro 2 early on, a 5.9-inch device based around the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. The G Pro 2 was subsequently followed by the LG G3 in the summer. Earlier this year we waited for a follow up to the G Pro 2 but LG instead appeared to drop the idea of the large 6-inch or so phablet and instead concentrated on the LG G4. This is not necessarily a bad thing as the LG G4 is a great device, although for some of us, we would have enjoyed a larger screen device. As hopes for the LG G Pro 3 faded, so an articled carried by the source website claims that it has received a report containing some details regarding a follow up, the LG G Pro 3.
This report explains that the LG G Pro 3 will be based around a 6.0-inch screen of QHD resolution, that is, 1,440 by 2,560 pixels. Under the skin it will pack the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 System-on-Chip, Qualcomm’s as-yet-unreleased follow up to the Snapdragon 810 and the first in a new family using their custom Kyro core. It’ll ship with 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, supplemented by a MicroSD card but there’s no word of what size of card it’ll support. The report states that the new device will contain a 20.7MP rear camera and an 8MP front camera. Finally, the rumor points to the G Pro 3 running Android 5.1 and will feature a fingerprint scanner of some description, too. Unfortunately, at this stage we don’t know what other features the new rumored device will come with such as the battery size, if it will have wireless charging or not or any other special features.
If the rumor is true, it’ll be interesting to see LG’s entry in the phablet market, where we can expect it to have a short term specification advantage over the other two well known phablet devices, the Motorola-built Nexus 6, Samsung Galaxy Note 4. This advantage will in all likelihood be short lived as Samsung are working on the next generation Galaxy Note 5 model, and we would expect Samsung to at least catch up with the LG G Pro 3.
