Samsung is reportedly prepping the launch of a new budget device as part of its J-series of affordable smartphones. A device bearing the model number SM-J200G has now showed up on GFXBench, which gives us a fair idea about the kind of hardware the device is going to pack in. The Galaxy J2 has been leaked previously on Geekbench, which gave us a first look at the possible hardware specs of the upcoming device. Now, the information available from the GFXBench listing seems to confirm some of the rumored spec-sheet of Samsung’s upcoming budget handset. However, a few of the details vary somewhat from the device’s previous sighting on Geekbench.
Coming to the hardware specifications of the Galaxy J2 as evident from the current leak, the smartphone is believed to feature a 4.7-inch display, with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. The display panel is said to support at least 5-finger multi-touch, and the device seems to be powered by an Exynos 3475 SoC, which is designed and manufactured in-house by Samsung. The chipset comes with an embedded quad-core Cortex A7 CPU clocked at a frequency of 1.3 GHz and a Mali-T720 GPU. The device seemingly packs 1 GB of RAM and will only have 8 GB of internal storage, if nothing changes between now and the eventual launch. The Galaxy J2 also looks set to come with a 5-megapixel primary camera on the rear and a 2-megapixel secondary camera on the front. The device will have support for an accelerometer, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, and connectivity options will include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS. The smartphone will also come pre-loaded with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box.
Samsung has been struggling to move its Galaxy S series flagships at the pace it would have hoped to, leading to a disappointing quarterly earnings report. The company has also reportedly been offering discounts on its flagships in order to boost sluggish sales. The Galaxy J series is the South Korean manufacturer’s new budget smartphone range, which it believes will help it wrest back some of the initiative it has lost in strategic emerging markets like China and India over the past couple of years, in the face of stiff competition from regional rivals. The company has already released the mid-range Galaxy J5 and J7 smartphones in the two aforementioned markets earlier this month and at fairly affordable prices. While the hardware on the Galaxy J2 doesn’t seem enticing enough by itself, the device is expected to be priced even lower than both the previously launched J-series devices. Sammobile claims that Samsung will launch the entry-level device only in Asia and Eastern Europe, giving North America a miss.
