Samsung is not that shy when it comes to releasing smartphones. Likewise, Samsung also do not seem to be shy when it comes to filing patents and coming up with new designs for their software and hardware. The recently released Edge variants, the Galaxy Note Edge and the Galaxy S6 Edge are both prime examples of how the company is looking to segregate themselves from the competition, by coming up with novel design concepts and bringing them to market. That said if recent patents are anything to go by, then it looks like the company is far from finished when it comes to their innovation ambitions.
Only a couple of weeks ago, reports emerged highlighting that Samsung had filed a patent for invisible buttons. These buttons consisted of sensors pads and would allow the user to extend the level of control over specifical apps, games and features without having to include additional hardware buttons on the device. Well, following on from that news it now looks like another patent has emerged which builds on the notion of these sensor pads.
The latest patent was actually filed back in November of 2014 but seems to just now be coming to light. The patent suggests that Samsung’s Edge devices may come with a much greater edges on future devices. In fact, the edges might wrap further underneath the device and to the back of the device. The logic being, that the device will be able to interpret a user’s grip and use these interpretations to further add to the functionality of the device. While devices like Yota’s YotaPhone look to incorporate the back of a device as a secondary screen, these patents suggest Samsung are planning to use the back of the device in a more interactive capacity. The patent goes on to suggest that the back controlling of the device will be customizable through the settings menu in a similar way to how customizations can be used on the current Edge models. Of course, as this is only a patent, there are no firm details on whether this will come to market and whether it is likely to be anytime soon. However, if it does, it seems it will be coming to a Galaxy Edge device first
