Password management app Dashlane has announced it is adding support for fingerprint sensors on Samsung’s smartphones like the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge, starting with immediate effect. The latest Android version of the app, which comes with version number 3.4.1.792 lists the feature as the only major entry in its changelog. Prior to this update, the app was on version number 3.4.0.748. The changelog for the latest update simply says, “Samsung users can now unlock Dashlane with Finger Scanner. Yet another way to access your passwords and important information safely and easily with Dashlane!” The company had previously announced support for the native biometric security integration that Android M is about to bring, which will make this particular feature on the app instantly compatible with just about all Android M-based devices with fingerprint scanners at once. The iOS version of the app already support’s Apple’s Touch ID.
Announcing the new feature on its official blog, the company says “there is even more on the horizon for Dashlane and biometrics technology that we’re excited to share soon, so make sure to check back here for our next update”. The mention of Dashlane’s future plans for integration of more biometrics technology could very well be indicative of support for other areas of biometrics security including retina scanners and facial recognition, which may be on the cards at some stage, once those features go mainstream. It bears mentioning here that another prominent password manager app – LastPass – has already long been supporting fingerprint scanners on Samsung devices. The app added support for Samsung’s Galaxy S5 as early as April 2014.
As for Dashlane, it happens to be one of the leading cross-platform password manager apps, which is available for Windows (x86-64), Mac OSX, iOS and Android. The program uses AES-256 encryption, and comes with a fully featured digital wallet that can authenticate and verify users’ credentials for digital transactions and more. It can automatically fill out credit card info etc. into forms during online financial transactions and offers other security features like automatic password generation and security breach alerts. While the free version of the app comes with most of the features of the premium app, the paid-for version does come with the ability to backup and sync data across multiple devices.
