Spotify launches Discover Weekly, Personalized Music

Lately, Spotify has been working on all kinds of new features for their service. As an attempt to help set them apart from the other competitors out there. With more and more popping up – and with Apple getting in the game with Apple Music – Spotify needs to step up its game. In May, the company announced a few new features, including adding video and podcasts to their app. Which hit iOS first is coming to Android at some point this year.

Now Spotify is launching a new feature today, called Discover Weekly. Basically it’s a playlist that’s personalized just for you. It learns from your listening habits to figure out what kind of music you like, and recommend new music to you to listen to. This playlist will be about 2 hours long, and will be updated weekly, as the name of the playlist notes.

In the beginning this feature may not be all that great. As Spotify needs to bring in the data of what you listen to first. Before it’ll recommend some songs you’ll really like. Over the next few weeks, it should adapt to your tastes a bit more. So just give it a bit of time, before judging it. However, that could be a hard thing to do.

Spotify hasn’t stated when Discover Weekly will be available. But we should see some updates to the Spotify apps on all their platforms soon. Unless it’s just a server-side switch. Looking at Spotify on my Xperia Z3, I don’t have the Discover Weekly just yet, nor do I have it on my desktop. So hopefully it won’t be too long before it shows up. The update will likely hit iOS before Android though, unfortunately. As that’s just how these things work these days.

It seems like Discover Weekly is going to be a perfect way to find new music, whether it be from a genre you wouldn’t normally listen too, or an artist you’ve never heard of before. Discovery is an important part of music. And making it easier to discover new music, is going to be a greatly used feature for Spotify.
