Android Wear continues to increase in functionality as more and more apps are released which are either compatible with the platform, or designed and built specifically for it. One of the latest things you’ll see available for Google’s smartwatch OS is a new app called Video for Android Wear and YouTube, and if the title of the app leaves anything to the imagination, it’s a YouTube player for your wrist. Despite many of today’s Android Wear smartwatches lacking any sort of audio capabilities, Video for Android Wear can actually still be useful so long as people have a Bluetooth headset connected to the watch to relay the sound of the videos. Without this though you’ll be left simply with the capability to watch videos without and auditory playback.
The app supports full video playback, as well as carries full support for Bluetooth headphones and Bluetooth speakers, so if you’re at home or anywhere else and you have a Bluetooth speaker handy you can connect it to the watch for audio, and as described above you can always connect Bluetooth headphones too. You can easily search for videos by typing or by speaking to the watch using Google’s voice actions which seems to work pretty well, and once you’ve found what you’re looking for you can watch it on your wrist, and thanks to the support for Google Cast you can even cast the videos to your Chromecast connected TV and the watch ends up being a remote for the video.
Video players for the Android Wear platform are few and far between, so if you feel this is part of what your smartwatch experience was lacking then you’re likely ecstatic it’s here. Most of what Video for Android Wear is capable of is included with the free version of the app, however, there is a full premium version which costs $2.99 that users can upgrade to. The premium version unlocks new features like channel customization for the watch playback, as well as access to videos and channels which you subscribe to. The app is also not picky about which Android Wear device you have, and seems to be compatible with every watch that is currently available on the market.
