WIND Mobile: Hires Glen Campbell for its New COO

WIND Mobile announced that their new Chief Commercial Officer would be Glen Campbell – not the musician that sang ‘By the Time I get to Phoenix’ – but the Glen Campbell that comes from the Bank of America Merrill Lynch.  He served as Head of Equity Research and Global Coordinator for Telecom Services Research – imagine that title hanging over your door – in addition, he has covered Canadian telecom services stocks for the past 19 years.  Campbell said, “I am really pleased to be joining WIND Mobile at this exciting stage in its development.  WIND has carved out an important position within the Canadian wireless marketplace providing affordable, unlimited wireless service to consumers.”

Campbell will report directly to Alek Krstajic, the Chief Executive Officer of WIND Mobile that came over from Public Mobile.  Krstajic said, “We are delighted to welcome Glen as our new CCO.  His strong telecom and investment industry understanding will further strengthen WIND as the company solidifies its place in the Canadian wireless landscape.”  Campbell will be responsible for WIND’s sales and distribution, marketing, brand and communications and customer care operations…in other words in charge implementing WIND’s overall wireless business strategy.

WIND Mobile has been in the news recently when Rogers purchased Mobilicity, and part of that agreement involved a shifting of some spectrum to WIND.  The new spectrum combined with WIND’s over 800,000 wireless subscribers should help them become more of a force in the Canadian wireless playing field.  It prompted Krstajic to say, “Wind is now the master of its own destiny…The foundations of being a solid wireless player is having a solid network, and right now what’s more important than having an LTE network is having capacity.”

WIND has been reaching out to expand their business by partnering with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and BIA Canada in which they received a $25 million contract to install wireless services in each of Toronto’s subway stations.  WIND subscribers will be able to make calls, text and use data in 15 TTC Subway stations.  This only adds opportunities for WIND Mobile as they try and grow to push the Big Three – Rogers, Bell and TELUS – into the Big Four.  The Industry Minister continues to push for more competition in Canada to lower prices.  He is also striving to extend the wireless reach more customers on the fringe and beyond.
