Samsung has been developing their Exynos lineup of processors for a while now. Those were typically integrated in some versions of their flagships, while the international versions were equipped with processors made by Qualcomm. This year, Samsung decided to put their Exynos 7420 in every version of the Galaxy S6, possibly because they weren’t convinced with the performance of the Snapdragon 810 or simply to be more independent from Qualcomm. That processor has proven to be very powerful and it currently has some of the highest scores in benchmark tests, plus it has been included in the company’s most recent offerings.
Well, Samsung is developing a new generation of processors, but this time, as it was reported earlier, they will use custom cores called Mongoose. They seem to combine these new type of cores with the typical Cortex-A72 ones and the results are quite remarkable. There is not much information about the new processor just yet, some reports claim that it will feature four cores instead of the eight cores of the current processor. Still it would manage to perform better as each core would run at 2.4 GHz. Some benchmark tests were leaked in China and as a result we can now see what to expect from the performance of the new processor.
The scores of the Mongoose processor are 2136 for the single core test and 7497 for the multi-core test, while the scores of the Exynos 7420 are 1486 and 4970, for each test respectively. The device on which the new processor was tested, is said to be running a Power Saving mode which underclocks the processor and still managed to get higher scores than the Exynos 7420, resulting in 1698 and 5263 for both tests. There’s an Ultra Power Saving mode and while the results are lower than the scores from the Exynos 7420, being 1323 and 3489, but even in that mode, the performance would be acceptable. Let’s remember that these scores are not official yet, so they might change at the time the processor gets released. LG is also be said to be working on a processor which scored higher than the Exynos 7420, but the difference is less impressive. The Mongoose looks to be the processor which might compete with the Snapdragon 820 and therefore, is likely to be equipping Samsung’s next flagship.
