Google has announced that they will launch a few devices to improve Wi-Fi connectivity in our homes. Every day, more devices are becoming compatible with Wi-Fi and while that makes them easier to control with just one device, like a smartphone or a tablet, connectivity might take a hit, making streaming or downloading files be slower than usual. Now, Google has announced a router designed to handle today’s needs to keep us connected while also making it simple to use.
The OnHub router was created with a partnership with TP-LINK and it features a design that is meant to be placed as a decorative item on top of a shelf or a sideboard and not on the floor where it doesn’t work as well. Its cylindrical design hides the 13 antennas and provides a sleek look which is complemented by the subtle blinking light on top. There are blue or black color options, but more colors will become available to better suit your home.
The router will be constantly monitoring channels and frequencies in the background to make sure the connection is the fastest and the most efficient while avoiding interference. Some devices can be set to get the fastest speed, according to how often are they used. The Google On app is what’s needed to configure the router with the network. It can also measure the bandwidth of each device, run network checks and make suggestions to fix certain issues, an orange light on the router indicates that you need to identify a problem, while a green color indicates that everything is working. A single tap can reveal the password so it can be shared by email or text to other users.
OnHub will get automatic updates to get more features and security patches, but those will not interfere with the connection. It supports Bluetooth and Weave to help devices communicate with each other. The router is available to pre-order starting today for $199.99 from online retailers like the Google Store, Amazon, and Walmart. In the coming weeks, it will be available in retail stores in the U.S. and Canada.
