If you’re a Republic Wireless customer, chances are things are about to get a little bit better for you anytime between now and the week, as Republic Wireless has just announced today that they’ll be taking this time begin rolling out the Cell To WiFi handover feature to their users. Some subscribers will get it today, others will end up getting it over the next few days but based on Republic’s statement within a week everyone who has a supported phone should have the feature enabled. They state that this excludes the DEFY and the 2nd Gen Moto X if it’s still running on Android KitKat.
Republic Wireless got things rolling by getting the help from 1,800 individuals who agreed to assist them in testing out the cell to WiFi handover, which Republic states not only helped them get things fine tuned so they could begin pushing this out to all their subscribers, but the cell to WiFi handover itself has helped them to improve the voice offload by as much as three percent which they boast is a pretty big deal. Republic also highlights that part of the reason for their continued effort to dive into WiFi handling voice calls, is because it costs them less to power the calls on WiFi than it does over the cell network, which in turn can help them keep the costs low for their subscribers across other services, something which they pride themselves on pretty heavily.
Anyone on Republic Wireless should soon notice the benefits of being able to start a call on the cell network and then immediately have it handed off to WiFi whenever they come in range of a connection, all without the call being interrupted which is pretty awesome. Aside from having a compatible device that supports the cell to WiFi handover capabilities, subscribers will also need to have the latest version of the app for this feature to get it. Other than having the latest up to date app, subscribers will also need to make sure cell to WiFi handover is enabled, which is a feature that can be found in advanced settings from the main settings menu on their device. From here it’s simply a waiting game.
