Arguably the biggest complaint from users this year in terms of the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, and Galaxy Note 5, have been the lack of a microSD card slot. The back lash was a little bit warranted. Samsung had been the only OEM offering a microSD card slot for quite some time, and even make and sell microSD card slots. Now all of a sudden, they decided we don’t need one. I’ve said many times before, that they can keep their current design language and still have a microSD card slot, and this is how. Adding another slot to the SIM card tray. We’ve seen it done with a few other phones, especially in China. Now its looking like the dual-SIM variant of the Galaxy Note 5 is going to be able to use a microSD card.
So basically what Samsung is doing here is with the second SIM card slot, the user can either toss in a SIM card or use a microSD card. We’ve seen this before on a few of Meizu’s smartphones. So it’s not necessarily something new. But it is something that is going to make some customers less happy. Simply because that dual-SIM model won’t be coming to the US, unfortunately. Samsung could have brought this to the US though, carriers may not have liked it, but having an extra slot even if it was just for a microSD card and didn’t double as a SIM card slot as well, it would have done well. And made plenty of loyal Samsung users very happy.
I have a feeling that microSD card slots are coming back to Samsung. There’s a big glaring reason as to why. And that’s because they sell microSD card slots. There’s a theory that’s been going around for some time that Google got rid of microSD because they wanted to sell cloud storage. Well the opposite is true for Samsung. They sell microSD cards, and they sell good ones too, so why not leave the microSD card slot there and sell more microSD cards. We’ll see when the Galaxy S7 comes out next Spring.
