The Galaxy Note 5 was announced by Samsung just a few weeks ago, on August 13th in NYC and London. And now we have have root for the device as well as TWRP Recovery available, thanks to a few developers over on XDA’s forums. Root is a great thing, as you are able to clean out some of all that bloatware as well as using Xposed on the Galaxy Note 5. However there are some notes that we should warn you about. You’re going to be using XDA forum member Manh_IT’s Noble Kernel to root the device. And because it’s using the kernel this is going to trip the KNOX counter. Which also means that you won’t be able to use the Galaxy Note 5 for security services like Samsung Pay in the future. At this point in time, there’s no way to reset the KNOX counter, or to get root without tripping the counter, unfortunately. So keep that in mind before attempting to root your Galaxy Note 5.
Getting root on the Galaxy Note 5 is pretty simple, and we urge everyone to read the thread on XDA’s website before attempting to root your device. And if you don’t feel comfortable following all of the steps, to not attempt to root your device. As rooting your device is not covered under warranty. Additionally, the process can seem a bit daunting. And according to XDA, right now the AT&T and Verizon models of the Galaxy Note 5 are not supported in this rooting process. The models that have been verified to work include the N920T, N920P, N920I, N920W8, and N920C. So make sure your device is compatible before attempting to root the thing.
TWRP is also available, and must be flashed through ODIN, but it is not required to have root. However, if you wish to flash a custom ROM, or kernel or anything like that, you’re going to want to have TWRP or another custom recovery on the Galaxy Note 5. As always, make sure you read the thread linked in the sources section below, if you are interested in rooting your brand new Samsung Galaxy Note 5.
