Benchmarks are important, but they should not be the deciding factor in whether or not you buy a device. Simply because manufacturers will overclock their CPU and GPU to get the highest score possible, which has been covered quite a bit recently. Similar to ISP’s giving devices running speed tests priority on the tower, to make you think you’re getting a faster speed, when you are actually only getting that speed for the test, and not when you’re actually browsing the internet.
Today, a mystery Samsung smartphone has appeared on popular benchmarking app, AnTuTu. And it absolutely smoked the competition. Literally. In my experience, the highest score I had seen on AnTuTu was around 60-65K. This Samsung device, the SM-G8508S, scored over 95K. To be exact, it was 95,972. Now we have no clue what device this is, or what hardware it’s running on. However, we do know it is a Samsung device thanks to the model number.
There’s some speculation going around that it could be the Snapdragon 820. Which is a big possibility. We know that it is sampling to OEM’s now and should be making its way into devices by the end of the year or early next year. But it could also be a newer Exynos processor.
What’s interesting here though, doing a quick Google search for this model number, you’ll see that it was benchmarked about this time last year as well. So could it be a device we were supposed to get last year? Maybe something completely new from Samsung? It’s likely not the Galaxy Note 5, as that has already been benchmarked and we’ve seen it hitting around 70K on AnTuTu. It’s very interesting, but important that we remind everyone to take this with a grain of salt. As there are many prototypes out there that may never see the light of day. But I’m sure I’m not the only one wondering what kind of hardware is in this device. Could it possibly be the Snapdragon 820? If so, it’s pretty impressive, and hopefully it doesn’t suffer from the same heat as the Snapdragon 810 has so far this year.
