Sony have been known to deliver pretty decent mid-range hardware for quite some time, and now their back with a pair of new devices. Both of which will suit very different users. The Xperia M5 is an excellent all-rounder with waterproofing and many of the features we’ve come to expect from the Xperia Z series, while the Xperia C5 Ultra is for those wanting to have a little more fun. With a 13-megapixel camera on the front to take some of the best selfies out there, the Xperia C5 Ultra is a smartphone for everyday fun.
Taking a closer look at the Xperia C5 Ultra, Sony have packed a 6.0-inch Full HD IPS display into a body that weighs 187g. This is a pretty big smartphone, and the large lens housing that 13-megapixel front-facing camera makes that much clear. Under the hood is MediaTek’s MTK6752 octa-core 64-bit CPU at 1.7 Ghz with 2GB of RAM. There’s 16GB of storage onboard here as well as microSD card support up to 200GB. The second camera around back is another 13-megapixel sensor, a Sony Exmor RS sensor no less with many of the hallmark Sony features. You can take a closer look at the C5 Ultra in the gallery below.
Moving on to the Xperia M5, and things are a little more mainstream. With a more manageable 5.0-inch Full HD display, and a high-res 21.5-megapixel rear-facing camera (capable of 4K video recording), this is an excellent mid-range option. There’s a 2,600 mAh battery powering this guy and running the show is the latest MediaTek X10 Helio, a 64-bit octa-core CPU clocked at a cool 2.0 Ghz. There’s 3GB of RAM here with 16GB of expandable storage, up to 200GB. Interestingly, the Xperia M5 also features a front-facing 13-megapixel camera, the only difference being that the Xperia C5 Ultra has the optics to back it up, where the M5 doesn’t. Both of these devices share similar software, running on top of Android 5.0 Lollipop, but the use of MediaTek processors could be a cause for concern for future updates. It looks like the Xperia C5 Ultra will be more of a device destined for Asian markets, where the Xperia M5 will be available mostly everywhere. The Xperia M5 is definitely the better device, and for all intents of purposes actually gives the Xperia Z3+ a run for its money, with the same IP65 and IP68 water and dust resistance and an octa-core CPU that is clocked higher and runs a little cooler. The Xperia M5 will be available in Black, Gold and White while the Xperia C5 Ultra will be available in Black, Soft Mint and White.
