Sony is not exactly doing that great in the smartphone space. The company is having issues selling enough of their devices, and will have to figure out how to change that really soon, otherwise they might face some tough decisions. That being said, Sony is doing great in other areas, they’re selling tons of smartphone camera sensors, and same can be said for the PlayStation department. We’re not here to talk about either of the aforementioned products though, but Sony’s fitness tracker, read on.
Sony has announced the original Sony SmartBand last year, and we’ve actually reviewed it a while back, in case you’d like to check that out. Speaking of which, Sony has just announced the 2nd-gen Sony SmartBand, conveniently called the SmartBand 2. First and foremost, the SmartBand 2 looks far more refined that the SmartBand 2, that much is obvious when you take a look at the product. The new SmartBand ships with the advanced heart rate tracking by monitoring your relaxation and excitement levels. The silicone wrist straps are back with this iteration of the Sony SmartBand, and you have plenty of colors (white, pink, purple / indigo and black) to choose from, of course. The SmartBand 2 is IP68 certified, which means it’s water resistant, which was to be expected.
The company has included three LED notification lights here, which light up when you get calls, notifications, messages, etc. You’ll get notifications in different colors for different events, and the vibration motor is also a part of this package. The 58mAh battery which is available on the inside should provide 5 days of use according to Sony, and the Band is compatible with both Android (4.4+) and iOS (8.2+). The Sony SmartBand 2 comes equipped with NFC and Bluetooth 4.0 (which is used to connect to your phone), and Sony has also developed a number of apps you can use with this smartband.
Sony’s newest smartband will be available in 60 countries starting September 2015 for $132. The Black and White color options will be available from the get-go, and the other two colors will roll out at a later date.
