Sony's Fall Flagships will not have USB Type-C

We had been hearing for a while that USB Type-C is the future. With the Apple Macbook, Google Chromebook Pixel and OnePlus Two all having USB Type-C, we definitely thought it was coming this year. However it appears that at least one manufacturer won’t be using it, at least when it comes to their fall 2015 flagships. In the latest leak of the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact, you can see that it has a micro USB port instead of a USB Type-C port. Which isn’t a bad thing, I’d definitely take micro USB over having a flap over the charging port, like we had with their devices up until the Xperia Z3.

In 2016 we’re expecting to see a whole lot more of USB Type-C, as it is a new-ish technology, it is going to take a bit of time before it’s actually on all of the devices out there. But it’s also important to remember that with USB Type-C, you will also need to buy new cables, and possibly adapters for your accessories you already have. Similar to what iPhone users had to do when Apple switched up the charging ports on their devices.

Right now, the word is that the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact will be announced at IFA. And Sony has a press conference set for September 2nd in Berlin. Which we will be attending to see what exactly Sony has to offer. Sony has just recently launched the Xperia Z3+ or the Xperia Z4 depending on where you are located, and the Xperia Z4v for Verizon here in the States hasn’t even been launched yet. Which is typical for Sony, and a big reason why we’ve wanted Sony to go to a yearly release cycle for their flagships. A 6-month release cycle just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense in this day and age.

So looks like micro USB on the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact. It also looks like they may be a bit thicker, but it’s a little tough to tell from the pictures. Definitely excited to see what Sony has to offer.
