While many companies are focusing their health and fitness efforts on activity trackers that can be worn around the wrist or clipped to pocket or waistline, Sony is working towards launching their Smart B-Trainer device, an activity tracker which aims to work in tandem with their comprehensive Lifelog app. The difference is that Sony’s Smart B-Trainer is also a headset and worn like a pair of wireless earbuds with the cord fitting around the back of your head from ear to ear. Sony announced this back during CES in January, but now they’re opening up with some information on availability which is something they hadn’t shared during the initial announcement.
Those looking to grab this tracker/headset from Sony will be able to do so this Fall when Sony plans to launch it in the U.S. As one would expect this is also a full-fledged headset and it can be used to listen to music playback, with a unique feature that lets runners control music playback based on their heart rate. For example the headset could select a track to help you dial back your pace if you have a faster heartbeat. If you haven’t already guessed, this is a runner focused device with the ability to allow for tracking stats like how far and how long a person runs using built-in sensors which include a barometer, GPS, gyroscope, a heart rate sensor, and sensors which measure your acceleration and cardinal direction. Users will also need a companion app installed on their device to pair with the tracker to log these details.
Since this is essentially a headset it’ll need some storage capabilities and Sony hasn’t forgotten about this aspect. They’ve loaded in 16GB of internal storage so runners can keep their music on the device if need be. Sony’s also set it up to handle sweat and rain, and it’ll be available in multiple colors including standard white and black as well as pink, blue, and a yellow color. Unfortunately Sony hasn’t listed a price for the unit yet, but those details should be expected once they get closer to an actual launch of the device.
