Sprint brings Calls, Texts for Mexico, Canada & Latin America

Sprint is now making it easier for you to travel to surrounding countries, and not worry about roaming fees. While AT&T is buying up carriers in Mexico, Sprint is working with them to get free calls and texts in Mexico, Canada as well as Latin America. It’s all part of this new add-on that’s called “Open World” and it is completely free. You just need to add it to your plan. You’ll get free calls and texts while in these countries. But what about data? Well you’ll get 1GB of data for free in Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Chile, Columbia, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Panama, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Each additional gigabyte of data will run you about $30.

Sprint has also opened this outside of the Americas. So if you are traveling to European, Asian or Middle Eastern countries, you can get discounted rates of 20 cents per minute and free texts. No free data however. It’s not a great deal, however it is a bit better than most of the other roaming deals that are out there from other carriers. If you’re going to be heading to a European country, I’d strongly suggest picking up a KnowRoaming SIM sticker. As it’ll get you unlimited data for just $8 per day in many countries. And that’s up HSPA+ speeds (and in some countries LTE). So it’s definitely a great deal.

It’s great to see more and more carriers in the US working to lower roaming fees. That’s one of the biggest reasons why many people don’t use their phone once they cross the border. And living near the border of Canada, it’s quite common to hop the border and head into Canada. With T-Mobile and Sprint changing up their roaming fees and programs, how long before AT&T and Verizon do the same? Hopefully not too long. These roaming bills can get quite pricey, especially if you spend a few weeks out of the country.
