Stagefright has been one of the most talked about topics in Android lately. While it is a security issue and some of us should be a bit worried about it, most of us won’t ever be hit with it. But it has made updates come out a whole lot quicker, and gotten some OEMs like LG, Google and Samsung to start pushing out Security updates once a month. That’s definitely a big change, and a welcomed change. We’ve seen the other carriers rolling out updates to their devices, and now we’re seeing Verizon do the same. While Verizon is notoriously slow in releasing updates, it’s great to see them releasing these rather quickly.
Verizon is currently rolling out the Stagefright update to the Samsung Galaxy S6, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1. All three of these updates are available now. So if you’re using one of these devices on Verizon, just head into the Settings, tap on About Phone (or tablet) then go to System Updates and tap on Check for Updates. And you should be able to pull down the patch for Stagefright. Now typically the update wouldn’t be that large, but users are also getting updated to Android 5.1.1 with the Stagefright patch. The update is likely to be a few hundred megabytes in size. Nothing too bad though. Now the update for the Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 is going to be a bigger update. Seeing as it’s the first Lollipop update it’s getting.
The update does bring a few other changes to the devices as well. For example, in the camera, you can see the exposure value. On the home screen you can choose to use the Parallax wallpaper effect, and on the lock screen, you can now have a live wallpaper. The builds for the Galaxy S6 is G920VVRU3BOG5, for the Galaxy S6 Edge G925VVRU3BOG5 and finally for the Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 T537VVRU3BOG1. For those interested in that stuff.
So there you have it. Stagefright and Android 5.1.1 rolling out to the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy Tab 4 10.1. All of which should be available now for your downloading pleasure.
