Xiaomi has been releasing smartphones like crazy this year. This Chinese smartphone OEM has announced a number of smartphones, and quite a few smart gadgets as well. That being said, the company is planning to unveil the new version of their Android-based OS in a couple of days, the MIUI 7. It seems like Xiaomi is getting ready to announce some new hardware soon as well. The Redmi 2 Prime handset has been leaked by Flipkart quite recently, and according to a number of rumors, the device will launch soon. Well, it seems like it might arrive sooner than we expected, read on.
According to a new report, Xiaomi might announce the first ‘Made in India’ handset later today. The event will reportedly take place in Vizag, a city inside the Indian stated of Andhra Pradesh, and the Chief Minister of the state will allegedly announce it. We still don’t know which device we’re looking at here, but it’s possible the Redmi 2 Prime is about to be launched. This handset will be really affordable, it will cost around $100 if the previous listing / rumors were accurate. The Redmi 2 Prime will sport a 4.7-inch 720p (1280 x 720) display along with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of in-built storage (expandable up to 32GB via microSD card). Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 410 64-bit quad-core SoC will power this handset along with an Adreno 306 GPU. The 8-megapixel camera will be available on the back of this phone, and a 2-megapixel snapper will be located on its front side. The 2,200mAh battery has also been mentioned in a previous listing, and Android 4.4.4 KitKat will come pre-installed here with MIUI 6 on top of it.
What is ‘Made in India’ initiative? Well, the Prime Minister of India has actually started this program a while back, giving manufacturers all sorts of incentives to start manufacturing their devices in India. A number of OEMs agreed to do it, and Xiaomi is one of them. At the moment, it seems like the Redmi 2 Prime might be the first device manufactured in India, but we’ll see. Xiaomi’s Hugo Barra is also said to be present at the event, but we’ll find out everything before the end of the day, stay tuned.
