Until recently, many of us didn’t think it mattered what charger we used to charge our smartphones and tablets. But then the batteries began to get bigger and bigger, and in turn, made the charge time take longer and longer. Then Qualcomm introduced Quick Charge 1.0 which charged our phones a bit faster, not too noticeably though. Then came Quick Charge 2.0, which charged our smartphones much faster. And is available with the Snapdragon 800-series processors. Samsung also has their own adaptive charging capability, which works with Quick Charge 2.0 chargers. So now we are all looking for Quick Charge 2.0 Chargers, and today we have one here from Omaker.
This Quick Charge 2.0 charger from Omaker is a dual-USB charger. So there are two ports here, however one is Quick Charge 2.0 and the other is not. The other outputs at 2.4A, which is still plenty fast and will still charge your phone at pretty much the same speed as Quick Charge 2.0 will. Omaker says that the second port is an “Universal Intelligent” port. Basically it’s their fancy way of saying that the charger talks with your smartphone to see how much power it can handle and pushes enough to charge it quickly, but not too much to over-power it and risk damaging the device. Most companies that make chargers that have at least one Quick Charge 2.0 port, have another port with this type of technology, however everyone calls it something different. They all work pretty much the same way, however. Both of the ports here on this Omaker charger are labeled. So the top one is a Quick Charge 2.0 port and the bottom is a 5V/2.4A port, or the Universal Intelligent port. One the front, above the two ports there is a LED indicator which will light up either blue or green. When it lights up blue, you’re charging 5V output, while green indicates 9V or 12V output. On the opposite side from the USB ports, you have your port to plug it into the wall. Now the two prongs do fold in, which is a nice trick as it makes the charger smaller, and you don’t run the risk of bending them at all. That’s the last thing you’d want to do with this Omaker Quick Charge 2.0 charger in your bag. At first, it can be a little tricky to unfold the two prongs, but after using them for a bit they start to ease up and can be opened and closed rather easily.
When you buy this dual-USB charger from Omaker, you also get a USB cable. There’s nothing that special about the USB cable. It comes with a 3.3-foot micro USB cable, that has Omaker’s logo on it. Additionally you get a User’s Guide in the box with the charger, that most of us wouldn’t read anyways, and I’m sure we all know how to use a wall charger, right? Omaker also provides a hassle free replacement, or you can opt to get your money back in the first three months. However, I don’t think you’ll be looking to get your money back on this one.
As far as safety goes, Omaker has taken all of the right pre-cautions here with their Quick Charge 2.0 dual-USB charger. Adding in several fail safes to keep your phone from catching on fire or blowing up. Which we’ve seen happen countless times already. Mix in the fail-safes with the premium materials and you are able to charge your smartphones without needing to worry about anything happening to them. Of course, you still don’t want to stick it under your pillow while it’s charging. That just doesn’t make much sense.
While this charger does support Quick Charge 2.0, it’s important to remember that Quick Charge 2.0 is indeed backwards compatible. Meaning that if you do not have a device that supports Quick Charge 2.0, say a Moto G 2015 or an Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3, you can still use the Quick Charge 2.0 port to charge it up. It will just charge up at a normal speed, and not an accelerated speed, unfortunately. While it’s unfortunate, it’s great because it means you don’t have to think “Oh does this phone have Quick Charge 2.0? No? Better not plug it into a Quick Charge 2.0 port then”. Making it convenient no matter what kind of phone and tablet you have. While this might sound like a first-world problem. Many people do have a smartphone and a tablet, and pretty much all tablets do not support Quick Charge 2.0. So if you’re bringing a tablet and a smartphone with you with this travel charger, you don’t need to worry about which port to plug either of them into.
The experience of using the Omaker Quick Charge 2.0 Charger was pretty much what I expected. Plug in the Galaxy S6 Edge+ or even my Sony Xperia Z3, and it charges them both pretty quickly. The Galaxy S6 Edge+ was coming in at a little over 2 hours, with the Xperia Z3 not far behind that. Of course, that also depends on how low the battery is when you plug it in. It’s typically under 20% when I plug in my smartphone. Using the 2.4A port, the results were a bit different. Slightly slower, but still much faster than using a regular charger which would give you 1, 1.5 or even 1.8A if you’re lucky. And there hasn’t been any issues with the phones getting too hot when charging up with this charger either, which is pretty sweet.
If you’re looking for an inexpensive Quick Charge 2.0 certified charger, this is a great one to pick up. I’d definitely recommend it, as it’s worked very well during my time of using the charger and I don’t have any complaints here really. It’s $17 right now on Amazon. That might sound a little pricey for a charger, but Quick Charge 2.0 chargers are normally around $20 or more on Amazon, so it’s actually priced competitively.
