These days, just about every gadget that we have is charged via USB, whether that’s our laptop (a Macbook or Chromebook Pixel), our smartphone, smartwatch or tablet. Not too surprising, and it also means we don’t need to get new chargers or cables whenever we get a new smartphone, tablet or gadget. Which is pretty nice. There are a number of products out there that include multiple USB ports for charging multiple devices. We’ve reviewed a few offerings from Anker and Aukey, and now we have one here from ORICO. The convenience of being able to charge up to 5 devices all at the same time is definitely a nice thing to have. I’ve been using the ORICO 40W 5-Port Desktop Charger for the past week or so, charging multiple devices and even tablets. And it’s worked out pretty well so far.
ORICO does not include a micro USB cable here with the ORICO 40W 5-Port Desktop Charger, unfortunately. You just get the power cable and the box with the 5 USB ports, the cord from the wall to the back of the desktop charger is quite long though, coming in at around 4 feet in length. But you can plug in USB Type-C, Lightning, and even micro USB ports. So you could charge your OnePlus One, your iPhone 6s and your Nexus 9 all at the same time. Each of the five ports here are 2.4A. While it’s not Quick Charge 2.0, it is still much faster than many of the other USB chargers that don’t support Quick Charge 2.0, as many of those are around 1.8A or even lower. With the Galaxy S6 Edge+’s large 3000mAh battery, it is still able to charge the battery in around 2 hours or less. Often less time. Now while each of the ports are rated at 2.4A, all five ports cannot do 2.4A at the same time. So it’s either 2.4A, or 8A overall, which is still quite fast, but for the most part, that’ll be under 2A per port.
The ORICO 40W 5-Port Desktop Charger is a great product to take with you when you travel. In fact, I brought it with me on my trip to Beijing this week, and it’s working out amazingly. I can charge everything but my laptop from this Desktop Charger. Meaning that I can use less outlets as well as bringing less chargers to charge all of my gadgets. Definitely a nice product to have when you’re traveling as you never know how many outlets will be in your hotel room. Most importantly, Airport security doesn’t want you to take out this desktop charger for extra scanning. So you aren’t getting held up at security when you have a flight.
On the top of the ORICO 40W 5-Port Desktop Charger, there is a blue LED light. This light serves to show you when the Desktop Charger has power. Ironically, when you unplug it from the wall, the LED light does fade out pretty slowly. It caught me off guard at first, but it’s not a real issue. Seeing as it doesn’t have power anyways. It’s not going to hinder how it works. Below the LED light, we also see the input and output for each port, which you can see, is the same. This is great because if you only have a couple of things to plug in, you can use any of the ports, and not have to worry about which one will charge your Galaxy Note 5 the fastest.
Available on Amazon, ORICO offers their 40W 5-Port Desktop charger in four colors. Blue, Green, Pink and Gray. Our model is the gray model, and the only part that is colored is the top, and not the entire desktop charger. The only real complaint that I have about the color is the material that the company use. It’s a shiny material, and as you can likely see in the pictures below, it picks up quite a bit of fingerprints, unfortunately. You likely won’t be touching the top of the desktop charger that often though, and it’ll likely be hidden away as well. So that’s not a huge deal. The rest of the desktop charger appear to be made of polycarbonate. That keeps it from picking up dents when or if you drop the charger. I did drop it a few times, and not a single mark on the desktop charger, luckily. On the back of the desktop charger is your power. Unfortunately it’s not the typical micro USB or regular USB port. So you will need to be sure to remember where you left the cable for the ORICO Desktop Charger. On the front are the 5 USB ports, with nothing on either side of the desktop charger. It’s a quite light charger, I’d say it’s even lighter than Aukey and Anker’s 5-port Desktop chargers, which we’ve also reviewed recently.
For right around $20, it’s hard not to recommend the ORICO 40W 5-Port Desktop Charger. With it being a really compact and lightweight charger, it’s a great product to take with you when you are traveling, and have less chargers to have to keep up with. The fact that ORICO does offer it in a number of colors (Pink, Green, Blue and Gray as mentioned earlier), makes it an even easier sale for many that want a specific color for their desk or bedside table. While it is sad that it doesn’t support Quick Charge 2.0, especially with just about every device lately supporting Quick Charge 2.0, or even being compatible with Quick Charge 2.0. Even devices like the Galaxy Note 5, that don’t feature a Qualcomm processor do still support Quick Charge 2.0. But it does charge at 2.4A, which is still plenty fast enough for most devices.
