In South Korea, local media reported that the 1,000 units of the Samsung Gear S2 which was available for pre-order were claimed by buyers within two hours after it was made available. The pre-orders of the Gear S2 were up for grabs via Samsung’s Gold Rush Gear S2 book sales. At the quick rate of the pre-orders being snapped, it seems that there is going to be a huge demand for this smartwatch. This pre-booking is only a prelude to the official day when Samsung will release the Gear S2 officially in South Korea on the 2nd of October. The Gear S2 has created a lot of interest among technology consumers and experts because this is Samsung’s first smartwatch which has a circular display.
The Gear S2 is a smartwatch which uses the Tizen operating system. It has a 1GHz dual-core Exynos processor with RAM of 512 MB and internal storage capacity of 4GB. It has a rotatable dial and a 1.2-inch circular Super AMOLED display. It has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities along with an NFC chip. For those who don’t know what an NFC chip is, NFC is an acronym for Near-Field Communication and this chip that has a limited radio frequency range of four inches. This chip can be used to connect with devices like smartphones or devices that can receive wireless monetary transactions. The Gear S2 is compatible with Samsung Pay, and it has a 250 mAh battery which is capable of charging wirelessly. The body of this device is available in the colours of black, grey and white.
Samsung plans to make the Gear S2 go further than its predecessors like the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and the Smart Gear Fit. The Gear S2 will be compatible with not only Samsung made smartphones but also with non-Samsung smartphones which are powered by Android OS. The minimum requirement is that the smartphone must at least run Android 4.4 (Kit Kat and above) OS and have a Bluetooth with 4.0 LE connectivity. As of now, the company is considering making the device capable of running with iOS, it wants to emulate what Google did with Android Wear. If this goes as planned, the competition between the Apple Watch and the Gear S2 is going to be pretty intense. Both Apple and Samsung will have to give their all to show their customers what they can offer in this particular area of technology.
