Udacity, the online university of sorts, has partnered with Google to offer nanodegree courses in India. Many of you might not be familiar with Udacity, but the firm is essentially an online-only university that specialises in courses designed for today’s tech industry. These aren’t your quintessential support roles either, but rather courses put together by the likes of Google and Facebook to teach those willing to learn, the skills that they need in order to be successful in today’s tech world. Udacity and Google have partnered together to offer courses on Android before, and now they’re coming to India.
These courses will included app development as well as data analysis and other areas Google is known for. The partnership has come together thanks to both Google and the Tata Trusts and will offer scholarships to around 1,000 students. Said courses will last from 6 to 9 months and will be created and taught by Googlers from the Internet giant’s Developer Relations team. These courses aren’t going to be free, sadly, but will cost just RS 9,800 a month and Udacity will refund 50% of the course costs upon its completion. Basically, those that end up completely the course will end up doing so for half the original cost. Google has also said that they’ll be offering a career summit for the top 30 graduates in Bangalore before the end of 2015.
This sort of thing is certainly encouraging for young professionals that want to get involved in app development or something similar. For Google’s Rajan Anandan, VP & Managing Director, Google South East Asia & India, he wants to see a change in India app submissions. Anandan says that ” only 2% of apps built in India feature in the top 1000 apps globally and our goal is to raise this to 10% in next three years.” This may or may not be attainable, but considering India’s exciting and rapid move into more technical industries, it seems like we might have a new app powerhouse on our hands in the next three-to-five years time.
