The Nexus event might be over, but thanks to an AMA some of the Google team are currently taking part in on Reddit, there is much more Nexus news coming through again today. So far, the AMA has revealed some interesting points. Firstly, the team have already explained as to why they have named the two devices as the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P. Although, by the tone of the conversation, it would seem that much of the talk so far is circulating around criticisms that are being found with the devices.
The biggest one so far is clearly the lack of wireless charging on both devices and the Google team has explained that this is partly due to the use of Type-C USB on both devices and the lack of the need for wireless charging. Although, the thickness which would have been added by including wireless charging was also a factor in their thinking. Now, some of the attention has specifically turned to the Nexus 5X with some Redditors asking why the device comes with only 2GB RAM and only 16GB internal storage (at least, as its baseline variant). While some are more focused on the 2GB RAM only, one Redditor raised the point that this is the same level of RAM and storage that was offered two years ago with the Nexus range.
In terms of the RAM, the team have responded to the criticism of it being too low by explaining that they believe what they offer with the Nexus 5X is good value for money. Specifically, the answer given was “We like to think we’re striking a strong balance between premium features/experiences and affordability.” Interestingly, when asked the same question about the 16GB internal storage that is included on the Nexus 5X, the answer given was almost identical to the first one with the clear same reasoning “The idea here was to strike a balance between premium features/experiences and affordability.” As such, it seems the reasoning which is likely to be given for any specific downfalls on the specs of the Nexus 5X will be the same.
