When Google released the Nexus 6 last year, many thought that the phone screen was too big yet that it still carried a nice, crisp and clear display since Motorola used an AMOLED panel with QHD resolution. After hearing rumors about the possible lower cost of the base model of the Nexus 6P, speculation began to rise on whether the Nexus 6P would have a screen that was able to match up to last year’s offering. While much of that will be left up to personal opinion, as part of the AMA Google has been doing on Reddit today, Hiroshi Lockheimer has confirmed that Google and Huawei are using the latest generation panels from Samsung Display for the Nexus 6P.
Google attributes much of this decision to stick with the newest Samsung AMOLED panels for the phone as caring deeply for the quality of the screen because this is something all users interact with to connect with the things that matter most to us. When you snap picture with your phone’s camera or when you watch videos with people you care about on your phone, the display is the window to all of it. Google is aware of this fact because they too care about how things are going to look while engaging with the things we use on a daily basis.
In regards to the WQHD AMOLED panel used for the Nexus 6P, Google states the specs they wanted fell into a very specific set. They had an idea of what they wanted and weren’t willing to budge, so to meet these needs which included things like white-point temperature, delta-E variance, color-space accuracy and other details, they had to use the most up to date Samsung panels. In Google’s own words, they needed the “most cutting edge panel technology available.” This makes it all the more impressive to see that Google and Huawei were able to keep the price for the 32GB model below the 32GB model of the Nexus 6 when it released in 2014, as Samsung’s latest panels likely aren’t cheap. In the end, this means great things for the consumer who may be interested in a new Nexus 6P as they seem to be getting one of the best displays Samsung has to offer.
