Google has been living in Mountain View since 2004 with its global headquarters, also known as Googleplex. As one of the largest companies in the world, it has been growing quickly year after year, and as a result, the need for physical space is enormous. According to recent reports by the local media, the company is looking for expanding even further their estates and for the first time San Jose, a city right next to Mountain View, may host some office space for the search giant.
The report says that Google is in talks for leasing two sites with a total area of 357,000 square feet of land in its hometown with an additional 150,000 square feet in nearby San Jose, which is the largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area and also dubbed the “capital of Silicon Valley”. The land areas in Mountain View which Google is interested in are yet to be constructed, as office projects are being planned by real estate developers separately.These are a 224,000-square-foot office project at 1625 Plymouth Street being developed by Broadreach Capital Partners, and a smaller office project at 1001 N. Shoreline Boulevard, being built by Calvano Development, spanning in a 133,000-square-foot area.
Expanding to northern San Jose would make sense for Google. First, a considerable share of Google workforce lives in the city, and an office complex there would make the daily commute a lot easier. Second, as other tech companies based in nearby cities such as Apple grow exponentially, space is getting really tight in areas like Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Cupertino and Menlo Park, and San Jose can offer this kind of expansion area needed by these companies.
Google has been through a metamorphosis process recently by changing its entire corporate structure. A new holding called Alphabet is going to represent what Google Inc. is today, an umbrella corporation that control several other companies including Google itself, Google Fiber, Google X, Nest Labs and others. All this new corporate body will need extra space. Neither Google, the real estate developers or San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo commented on the subject but said that the city would be a good fit for Google.
