When it comes to Android, Acer is not the first name that pops into your head. Instead, that name is often Samsung, or perhaps LG, Motorola, Sony and so on. Acer has been making Android smartphones for some time now, but they only really ship them in parts of Europe and emerging markets. Their Predator line of PC gaming equipment, which has now expanded into curved displays and even projectors is doing well for them. Acer have put together their Predator styling and high-end gaming features with their Android tablet line to create the Predator 8.
The Predator 8 was announced earlier on in the year, but Acer are showing it off on the IFA show floor, and we’ve got to spend a little quality time with it. If you thought the NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet was an edgy piece of Android hardware, the Predator 8 will show you how wrong you were. Not only does thing look like something out of a sci-fi film, it’s genuinely packed with gaming features. The Intel Atom x7 processor, which might make you think twice, is powerful with four 64-bit x86 CPUs clocked at 1.6 Ghz a piece with a boost speed of above 2.0 Ghz. Elsewhere, there are two motors that deliver haptic feedback into your hands, and it’s convincing enough to give your games console’s controller a run for its money. On stage, Asphalt 8 ran as smooth as butter, and the vibration was strong and a lot more satisfying than just a little pulse from one side of the tablet.
The Predator 8 is an excellent piece of hardware, and if you took away the Acer logo on the front of this thing, you’d think this was something from a bespoke firm, not the firm known for everyday laptops and computers. They also announced the Predator 6 gaming smartphone, but we won’t know much more about the Predator 8’s smaller brother until CES, so we were told.
