Google has a knack for adding some pretty useful things to Android, as well as throughout their suite of Apps. Things that you wouldn’t even think about needing or wanting in Android, but once they are there you don’t want to lose them. Quite a while ago, Google introduced a new widget that you can use to see what song is playing. Whether that be on your smartphone, or on the radio in the car. It was pretty nifty, and something that many of use used quite often. But now it appears that Google might be bringing that into the Google Play Music app. According to Android Police, a few users are getting a prompt in Play Music “Identify what’s playing”. Tap on the prompt and it will tell you what’s playing. It basically works as you’d expect it too.
It appears that this isn’t part of a specific version of Google Play Music or the Google Search app. So this could very well be some testing going on from Google. With the big Google announcement next week, it could quite possibly be a new update to Google Play Music coming out next week, featuring this new feature. It’ll be a pretty useful one as well. Android Police also states that after searching for the song, if you are subscribed to All Access/Google Play Music Unlimited, it’ll automatically add it to your library. Which isn’t too surprising. I mean there is a reason why you were searching for that song.
While the feature is indeed cool, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to have inside of Play Music. Chances are if you are playing music in the app, then you already know what it is. Considering the app shows it at the bottom of the screen. But if you’re in the car and listening to the radio, you could pop open the Play Music app and see what’s playing on the radio. Which could be helpful. We should see it reach more users soon. As with most testing, this may or may not come to the app for everyone.
