About two weeks ago, Nextbit finally took the wraps off of their new smartphone, and their first smartphone. The Robin. This is the first fully cloud-powered smartphone running Android. We’re looking at a 5.2-inch 1080p display here powered by the Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. However you also have 100GB of storage in the cloud. The Robin continuously is making space on your phone by offloading items to the cloud. Making that 32GB of storage, plenty of room for all the apps and games you are planning to have on your phone.
When Nextbit launched the Robin, they put it up on Kickstarter for those interested to help fund the phone. Their initial goal was $500,000. Which they surpassed pretty quickly. Now it’s two weeks later and they are passed $1 million, essentially doubling their goal. At the time of writing this, Nextbit was at $1,016, 124 in funding. Not bad for a brand new smartphone that’s running on the cloud. The Kickstarter still has a few more weeks left, running through October 1st of this year.
The Robin is a pretty interesting phone, primarily due to it running from the cloud, and that’s for a few reasons. Number one and probably the biggest part is security. Storing your photos and personal info in the cloud scares people. After seeing all these hacks in recent months and even years, many won’t feel safe in pushing all of their content from their phone to the cloud. The second is data usage. Offloading all that content to the cloud is going to use a lot of data. However, what Nextbit has said is that it will only offload when it’s connected to WiFi and plugged in. This way it’s not using all your data plan, and your battery. Pretty smart.
If you’re interested and want to be an early adopter, head on over to the Kickstarter – the link is in the sources section below – and pledge your $349 and grab one. However, we must remind everyone that this is a Kickstarter, so it could get cancelled (you will get your money back if that happens). But just keep that in mind when parting with your $349.
