Samsung Electronics recently announced their new Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch. This is the first Samsung smartwatch to have a circular design with a unique rotating bezel. The Gear S2 will come in two variations – the Gear S2 and the Gear S2 Classic – in order that Samsung could reach two distinct audiences. The Gear S2 Classic is designed for users that prefer a more “timeless” watch design and is offered in an elegant black finish and matching leather band. The Gear S2 is looking for those that are on-the go and admire a more “minimalistic and modern” design. Samsung Canada has just let our source know that the devices will be available through all major retailers and the Samsung Experience Stores the beginning of October. No pricing was reveal as of yet.
While the wearable tech industry continues to grow, many people keep holding off on purchasing a smartwatch…waiting for the ‘perfect’ device. Samsung believes the time is now and JK Shin, CEO and Head of Samsung’s IT & Mobile Business said, “For the past several years, Samsung has pioneered and advanced the wearables category, bringing brave new concepts to the smart wearables market. The Samsung Gear S2 reflects Samsung’s most progressive innovation. It is the perfect complement for any occasion, easily taking you from day to night, from work to workout–and ensuring that you get more out of every moment in your day, by making it smarter and ultimately more personal and fun.”
The new Samsung Gear S2 is only 11.4 mm thin with a 1.2-inch circular display with a resolution of 360 x 360 and 302 pixels-per-inch (PPI). It is running Samsung’s latest Tizen OS and uses their own Exynos dual-core processor clocked at 1.0 GHz with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. It has an integrated e-SIM that allows the Gear S2 (3G version) to connect to 3G networks without needing a dedicated SIM card. It also sports an NFC radio that allows you to connect with Samsung Pay to make purchases with your smartwatch. The system will be rolling out to Korea and the US this year and Canada soon after.
According to Samsung, the battery should last you 2-3 days – a 250 mAh battery will be in the non-3G version and a 300 mAh will be in a slightly thicker (13.4mm) 3G version. Charging of the battery is accomplished via the accompanying dock. The Gear S2 is also IP68 dust and water-resistant. The Gear S2 will be available in two colors – a dark gray body and band or a silver body and a white band. The Gear S2 Classic will come only in a black body and a black leather band. We will give you more about availability and pricing in Canada when they are released.
