Samsung is said to be planning to show off its transparent OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) display panels at the IFA 2015 trade show, being held in Berlin this week. Previous reports have suggested that the company has been working on the technology for some length of time, and if the latest reports are to be believed, the company finally seems ready with its first generation panels to be displayed publicly at the event. The display panels are believed to be aimed at commercial establishments rather than retail consumers, and are said to measure upwards of 55-inches in size. The company apparently does happen to have a consumer-centric product though, in the form of a display panel, which happens to double up as a mirror.
The South Korean consumer electronics company unveiled the world’s first transparent OLED display panels as a proof of concept earlier this year at the Retail Asia Expo 2015 in Hong Kong. The panels are reportedly integrated with Intel RealSense technology, which enables them to create a virtual interactive “self-modeling” wardrobe – a technology that allows users to virtually see how items of clothing or accessories would look on them if they were to actually put them on in real life. As for its mirror OLED displays, Samsung claims they’ll deliver at least fifty percent higher reflectance than other products in the market, and also offer a much better color gamut and significantly higher contrast ratio.
At the event in Berlin this week, Samsung is not only expected to reveal more about these new, innovative pieces of technology, but the company is also said to be planning to unveil new OLED televisions to add to its already extensive collection. The new models will come in large screen sizes featuring 55 and 65-inch displays, and will boast of 4K resolution. Even though OLED panels have traditionally been priced higher than LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panels, their prices have been coming down in recent times resulting in consumer electronics companies introducing more consumer-oriented OLED products, which are said to have a significant advantage over traditional LCD panels in terms of picture quality, viewing angles, color accuracy and contrast ratio.
