Sonos Releases New Smart Speaker And Tuning Software

Sonos is an American manufacturer of a smart HiFi wireless sound system. Their innovative technology allows a user to create a network of connected speakers in order to stream music all over the house, with a variety of ways to control it, from a smartphone to an Android Wear smartwatch. Today the company just announced two new products, the PLAY:5 flagship smart speaker and a running software to tweak older models of Sonos speakers called Trueplay. According to their press release, the PLAY:5 was intended to replicate the sound created by high-end studio used by the artists to make the music for you. It is composed by six synchronized, custom-designed drivers with mid-subwoofers for lows and tweeters for highs.

There’s a lot of science to make a speaker reproduce the best songs. If you already have a great hardware, the acoustics of the room also has a big impact and properly calibrating a speaker is usually complex. Their new tuning software was released to make this process as simple as possible with the aim of a smartphone. The way it works is really interesting: through an app on your smartphone, the Sonos speaker emits a sound pulse and then the software on the phone analyses the results, calculating the best settings for the Sonos speaker and automatically adjusting the tuning for the best sound quality for that given room and environment. “Trueplay is a revolutionary system that gives music lovers confidence that they’re hearing what their favorite artists labored to produce, independent of the room’s acoustics and speaker location,” said CEO John MacFarlane. “Finally there’s a simple, reliable process that delivers studio-quality listening experiences in each room of the home”. This tuning system is especially useful when a speaker is located in weird places like a corner in your room, which will affect the sound quality.

The good thing about Trueplay is that it works with older models of Sonos speakers. As for the new PLAY:5, it features touch controls and comes with 5 antennas for a reliable wireless connection. Just like previous models, it is compatible with both Sonos Playbar and Sonos Sub. The new speaker is set to cost $549 USD (579 EUR) and will be available in black and white. There’s no word on when they will be sold, but it should start soon. You can click here to go to their website and sign up to be notified when it hit the market.
