Chromecast launched around 2 years ago now, and Spotify has just now built in support for the Chromecast. During Google’s event today in San Francisco, the company announced that Spotify integration will be rolling out today. And hitting the older model of the Chromecast in the coming weeks. The app update has actually already begun pushing out. A few users saw the update earlier this morning.
With Spotify integration for Chromecast, you can easily cast music to your TV. But perhaps even more importantly, with the new Chromecast Audio that was announced today, you can stream over WiFi to your favorite speaker from within the house or your office. With Spotify, it will recognize where it’s currently playing and appear in the app. Similar to what it does now with multiple devices. So for instance if I have Spotify running on a Moto X Pure Edition connected to a Chromecast Audio speaker, and I pick up a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+, I can see what it’s playing and switch to that device. Easy as can be.
Chromecast has been around for two years now, and Google has sold over 20 million Chromecast devices as of now. That’s not a shabby number at all. Google also touted that leads the industry in that amount of time. By “Industry” they are referring to competitors like the Amazon Fire TV Stick and Roku, which are both very popular, as they are the same price as the Chromecast. The ecosystem for Chromecast has been growing and growing. Adding Spotify today, as well as the NBA, NHL and a few other sports apps later this year. It makes you wonder why anyone would get a set-top box? Google also announced that they are bringing gaming to the Chromecast. Where your phone can now mirror itself onto your TV using Chromecast and use the phone as the controller. Pretty sweet.
The Chromecast and Chromecast Audio are currently available for order now. Both are going for just $35, which makes it a tough competitor amongst the other options that are currently out there. We’ll have plenty more content on the Chromecast in the next few days.
