T-Mobile has updated their support pages for the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 (2013) and Nexus 9 to show that there is a new update heading out to all five of these devices. The update is said to be build LMY48M. Magenta’s support pages just list “Android Security enhancements” along with the general bug fix lines on the changelog. So this is likely the monthly security update that Google had said was coming after Stagefright happened. Nice to see the search giant following through with that. LG and Samsung should also be pushing out some updates pretty soon, as they too announced monthly security updates.
While we’ve seen carriers post notes on updates for Nexus devices before, and they’ve been wrong. That is could happen this time around. So we’ll treat this as a rumor for now. We will likely see Sprint also publish updates to their pages for the Nexus 5, and Nexus 6, later today or tomorrow. We’ll be keeping an eye out on the updates for all of these Nexus devices. And will be sure to let everyone know once the rollout begins.
It wouldn’t be surprising to see factory images appear today as well. So those that want to be on the latest version of everything, can just simply flash the factory image and have build LMY48M on their Nexus. This update is coming ahead of the Marshmallow announcement, which should be later this month. Currently the leaks and rumors are pointing to an announcement on September 29th, with the pre-orders for new Nexus hardware coming on October 13th. As always, we’ll be keeping you updated on the latest on Marshmallow and new Nexus hardware this fall.
Stagefright was actually a blessing in disguise. As it made Google and a few manufacturers push out monthly security updates, which is something we didn’t have before. LG, Samsung and Google will also be pushing out updates for their older devices, as seen here. Which is definitely a great thing, for those that don’t upgrade their smartphone every year or even several times a year. Like many of us do these days. Monthly security updates should help keep us safe from things like Stagefright.
