YU To Launch Third Smartphone In India On September 8th

Yu Televentures, the online-only smartphone brand of Micromax Informatics, is slated to launch a new handset on the 8th of this month, if reports in the Indian tech media are to be believed. The company is said to have already sent out invites to the media in the country to a launch event scheduled for next Tuesday, for what promises to be the next affordable smartphone in the company’s steadily increasing portfolio. The impending launch will be the third smartphone for YU, after the mid-range Yureka and the entry-level Yuphoria, which were launched earlier this year to a largely positive response from both the media as well as the consumers for the most part. As for the invite received by the press early on Thursday, it carried what sections of the tech media in India believe to be a cryptic hint about the possible nomenclature of the upcoming handset. “When Future Meets Past – The Next Wonder Will Be Unveiled”, is what the invite had to say. FoneArena believes that the upcoming handset will be called YU Wonder.

One curious thing about the upcoming launch is that the new smartphone from YU will reportedly be available on e-commerce site Snapdeal, as part of an exclusive deal between the two companies. Both the previous smartphones from the company however, were launched exclusively on Amazon. The partnership between Micromax and Snapdeal was revealed through a Twitter conversation between Mr. Rahul Sharma, the co-founder of Micromax Informatics and Mr. Kunal Bahl, co-founder and CEO of Snapdeal. In a seemingly orchestrated exchange on the microblogging site, Mr. Bahl first tweeted, “@rahulsharma What I saw today was amazing, people will be pleased with what they see. Together, let’s shake up the industry! YU have been making headlines. It’s about time that we did something together?#FutureIsYU”. Following which, Mr. Sharma replied, “@1kunalbahl Absolutely! Let’s shake up a few chips together. YU and Snapdeal. #FutureIsYU”.

Apart from launching the company’s third smartphone under the YU brand, Micromax is also expected to launch the first ever YU-branded power banks, which were imported into India not so long ago, according to a listing on Indian import / export tracking website Zauba late last month. The power banks came in two different capacities of 5,000 and 10,000 mAh, and will now probably be launched alongside the new smartphone on Snapdeal, according to FoneArena. While nothing can be said for certain at this stage about what Micromax really has in mind, all will be revealed, come the 8th of September.
