We’ve been hearing rumors about it for some time now, but the OnePlus X is finally official today, and those looking for a budget smartphone have one more excellent choice on their hands here. For $249 or €269 it’s yet another excellently-priced device to come from the Chinese upstart. Of course, this means that there’s also an invite system attached, once again, but let’s not get bogged down in all of that right now and focus on the new device’s camera. The OnePlus X is launching with a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera as well as an 8.0-megapixel front-facing camera, so let’s dive a little deeper.
Focusing on the rear-facing 13-megapixel camera, it’s paired with an f/2.2 aperture lens as well as Phase Detection Autofocus, something that OnePlus say results in their fastest camera to date. OnePlus is claiming that the X will focus in 0.2-seconds, which is a bold claim for a device such as this, but we’ll have to put it through its paces to say for sure. As you might have expected, the OnePlus X features OxygenOS like the OnePlus 2 does, and with that comes a fairly stock-looking camera app. Here on the X however, this does include HDR as well as Clear Image and what OnePlus is calling “optimized white balance and saturation” for accurate photos. Around the front, that 8.0-megapixel front-facing camera appears to be more about the sensor’s resolution than anything else, but it will result in clear and sharp selfies at the very least.
We got to spend a little time with the OnePlus X prior to today’s announcement, and that meant a little quality time with the camera on the OnePlus X. We have a smattering of sample shots for you to take a look at in the gallery below, but there’s a chance this isn’t final software, so as we saw with the OnePlus 2 at launch, there could be room for improvement here. Below is just a quick look at what the OnePlus X can do, and we’ll have more, including comparisons to other OnePlus devices in the coming days.
