Last year, the Droid Turbo was the first device from Motorola to launch with a 21-megapixel camera, much to the disappointment of Moto X users everywhere. What a difference a year can make, and now with the new Droid Turbo 2, Verizon’s latest flagship device is one again launching with a 21-megapixel camera, albeit one that’s quicker and performs better. Considering that the Moto X and Droid devices are both created by Motorola, it’s no surprise that they keep on sharing some common DNA. Earlier this year, the Moto X Pure was announced with a 21-megapixel camera that DxOMark ranked very highly, indeed. All this means that there are high hopes for this year’s Droid Turbo.
Starting off with sheer facts, the 21-megapixel rear-facing camera is similar to last year’s offering, with an f/2.0 aperture and the ability to record 4K, but the front-facing camera jumps from 2.0-megapixels to 5.0-megapixels. This allows the Droid Turbo 2 to be better at video calling and of course, taking those selfies that Droid owners like to pretend they don’t take. The rear-facing camera sports phase detection autofocus, which Motorola is saying is “rapid” but to you and I it’ll essentially be pretty quick but more importantly accurate as a result. Meanwhile, the front-facing camera is described as having a wide-angle lens, and it’ll perform much the same as other front-facing cameras.
We’ll have to take the Droid Turbo 2 through its paces before we can say how good it is, but on the face of things it looks like users will be getting the same sort of performance as the Moto X Pure, which has a great camera overall. No matter what though, the Droid Turbo 2 is a great device, and if you’re looking for a customisable version, people can even refresh their design once after they’re purchased one through Moto Maker. Plus, there’s a shatterproof display as well, something the clumsy users out there would appreciate.
