Towards the very end of last month, Google took to the stage to announce and introduce their latest devices to join the Nexus range. These were the highly reported on Huawei Nexus 5X and the LG Nexus 6P. However, Google also unveiled some new Chromecasts and also another tablet/laptop hybrid in the form of the Pixel C. For some, it was a little surprising that Google unveiled two new Nexus smartphones, as over the last couple of years, the emphasis has seemed to be on a new Nexus smartphone and a new Nexus tablet. However, there was no Nexus tablet in sight this year, an element which was understood to be a sign of the times.
Well, ASUS Chairman, Jonney Shih took part in an interview with Trusted Reviews and has already this morning revealed that the ASUS ZenFone 3 would come sporting a Type-C USB port. It now sees that one of the questions Shih was also asked directly, was in regards to the popular ASUS Nexus 7 tablet and whether there would be a third generation device.
In responding, Shih does make a note of the general decline in the tablet market overall and how it is difficult to do much with this market, even highlighting the decline of the iPad. However, Shih also hinted that there could be a Nexus 7 (3rd-Gen). In fact, Shih very much hinted that this has certainly been an aspect which has been talked about between ASUS and Google, stating that the biggest hurdle has been figuring out how to improve with the third generation device. Shih notes that the “Nexus 1” (Nexus 7 2012) was a device which came with much excitement, while the second generation Nexus 7 (2013) saw a refining of the specs and build. On this point, Shih notes that it has been hard to identify where they can make a possible next generation device any better for the end-user. However, Shih also does make a point of stating that ASUS and Google are working together on a “number of products” and also adds that we should all “stay tuned” on the topic of a future ASUS/Google Nexus device.
