Fairphone 2 Now Available As World's First Modular Handset

Fairphone is a Dutch company founded back in 2013. This company has released the world’s first ‘ethically sourced smartphone’ the same year it was founded, and the Fairphone 2 landed back in July. This device was available for pre-order for quite some time now, and those of you who would like to purchase one, can do so now, the company has announced that the phone is available for open purchase. Now, this device is quite interesting for one particular reason, read on.

The company calls Fairphone 2 a ‘modular smartphone’. Well, this device isn’t exactly a Project Ara competitor, but it is modular. You cannot get better components and put them into this phone, but you can easily disassemble this phone. Fairphone has actually made this phone so that it’s extremely easy to disassemble and repair if needed, which is something the company is very proud of.

Anyhow, the Fairphone 2 features a 5-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) IPS display along with 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 32GB of internal storage (eMMC 5.0). This phone is powered by the Snapdragon 801 quad-core SoC along with an Adreno 330 GPU for graphics. The 8-megapixel CMOS camera (OmniVision OV8865 sensor, 1.4um pixel size, f/2.2 aperture) is available on the back of this phone, and a 2-megapixel CMOS shooter (OmniVision OV2685 sensor, 1.75um pixel size, f/2.8 aperture) is available up front. The device ships with a 2,420mAh battery on the inside, and also has support for two SIM cards. The Fairphone 2 also offers 4G LTE connectivity, and Android 5.1 Lollipop comes pre-installed here. If you’re interested in seeing how easy it is to disassemble this device, check out the video embedded down below which was released back in June. As far as the design of this phone goes, it sports a rather industrial design, simplistic even. Now, if you’d like to purchase this phone, you’ll have to set aside €529.38 (will ship in December), which is kind of pricey considering this phone’s specifications. One thing is for sure though, the Fairphone 2 is unique, and if you’d like to own a device which is so easy to disassemble, then this might be the device for you.
