Settling down for a movie night is one of the most enjoyable and common pastimes many of us do. It is great for families, couples and even when you are by yourself. As such, it is no surprise that there is a ton of movie-related apps available through the Play Store. In fact, the list of apps which are movie-based is almost endless. So, to try and break down the choices a little, below is ten movie-based apps for Android that are worth checking out, if you have not already. Disclaimer time – Many Android movie watchers maybe wondering why apps like Kodi are not present here. To try and explain this, we are just looking at straight out of the box movie apps. So ones where you can download and start watching without the need for a plug-in, extension or add-on.
Netflix
Starting off today’s list is an app which will need next to no introduction. This is Netflix and undoubtedly the most used movie app out there. You do need a subscription to use Netflix, but can make use of a thirty-day free trial. Great app due to its wide selection of movies although, the newest movies do take their time in arriving.
Crackle
Crackle is an interesting app and as time has gone by, its adoption has consistently been growing. Just like its selection of movies. Crackle is backed by Sony, so you will only find Sony movies available here. However, they are all free to watch with the exception of a few ads which have to be endured. Small price to pay though for a nice selection of both old and newer movies.
Hulu
Like Netflix, Hulu is probably one of the more well-known TV content apps currently available. It is no secret that Hulu places an emphasis on TV programs compared to movies, but it still does have a movie selection which is worth checking out. Be prepared though, the selection is not as varied as other apps, although, you are more likely to find a real gem or classic here.
YouTube
YouTube is another app which needs no introduction, this is easily the app which gets the most traffic on this list and has the highest number of videos available. Of course, most of these are not actually movies and are instead, anything but. However, you might be surprised at how many movies you can find on YouTube for free. Not to mention, you do always have the option to buy movies too.
Viewster
Viewster is another app which is always worth checking when looking for a movie to watch. This one does have quite a decent selection of movies, although, they are sometimes a little more obscure than some of the other mainstream apps. If you prefer the more secure, then this will be the app to go for.
Vudu
Vudu is one of the apps which was quick to adapt the evolution of how consumers now rent movies. As such, Vudu is one of the apps which is best thought of as the Blockbusters of now. You can rent movies, buy them and even watch some trailers. Good app with a nice and clean UI.
Redbox
Those who do still rent DVDs will be well aware of Redbox as it is one of the big DVD rental companies. Well, this is their app and as such, if you prefer to rent digitally then this one is also worth downloading. Not to mention, your first rental is on them. Read the description on Play for details on how to grab that free movie.
Movies by Flixster
OK, so Flixster is not a direct movie app, however, it is one worth having at our disposal. With this app, you can curate your list of movies that you want to see and instantly be directed to where you can see them, either through subscription services like Netflix or through purchase services. Not to mention, you can book tickets for the cinema too. Great for those who have a lot of movies to get through and an ideal way to organize that list.
Shudder
Shudder is an interesting app. Unlike most of the apps on this list, this one is genre-specific and that genre is horror. If you are a horror movie buff then this is one worth checking out. It is worth noting that this app is based on a subscription service, so you do have to pay for the content, but with a horror-specific curated list of titles, for those interested, it just might be worth paying for.
Google Play Movies
Of course, there’s always Google Play Movies. Chances are you already have this app on your device which is a good thing, as Play Movies is an excellent way to watch movies. You can rent movies, view your own collection of stored movies and even sometimes grab a free movie when Google is feeling generous.
