When it comes to smartwatches, there are plenty currently available to choose from. However, that does not mean that the industry is already becoming saturated as companies are always looking for the next twist to make their offering more instantly recognizable. In the case of smartphones, this can be best thought of as Project Ara which is Google’s envisioning of how a modular (plug and play component based) smartphone could be. In terms of smartwatches, this is best thought of as BLOCKS, which is thought to be the world’s first modular based smartwatch. One which the company state is the last smartwatch you will ever need thanks to its emphasis of being able to hot-swap components. For instance, you can simply carry a secondary battery module with you and swap out the empty battery when needed.
The BLOCKS modular Smartwatch was first announced all the way back in 2014 and since then has hit the news repeatedly thanks to the device attracting the likes of Qualcomm, with the BLOCKS smartwatch now coming with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor inside. In fact, only last week did reports emerged suggesting that the smartwatch would begin a Kickstarter campaign on October 13th to help fund the building of the watch. Well, today is that day and right on cue, the Kickstarter campaign has indeed now gone live.
Those entered in being one of the first to own a BLOCKS Modular smartwatch can now sign up to back to project. To do so, will cost you $195 for the base model of the smartwatch. Although, rising scales of $250 and $260 would have secured you the BLOCKS smartwatch along with some additional modules. However, those prices are early bird prices and it looks they have already gone, while the initial $195 is still open. Of course, there are multiple other premium options for you to choose from and get in on the action too. For instance, you can grab a BLOCKS Core Smartwatch which is engraved with your name on it (along with some modules) for $465. You can find out more or offer your backing by clicking here and heading over to the Kickstarter page.
