On Tuesday, Motorola announced the Droid Turbo 2 with Verizon. It’s basically a Moto X Pure Edition on steroids, but there’s one feature here that has all of us excited. And that’s the display. It is a 2560×1440 resolution AMOLED display, but it is also shatterproof, according to Motorola. The company has been working on this ShatterShield technology for over a year now, as it is a real pain point for many consumers. And with the Droid Turbo 2 this year, that’s the big selling point. Motorola is also offering people looking to upgrade to the Droid Turbo 2, the opportunity to trade in a shattered smartphone, and get up to $300 credit towards the purchase of the Motorola Droid Turbo 2.
As is normal with smartphone launches, Motorola has a few videos available for the Droid Turbo 2. One takes us behind the scenes in ShatterShield and tells us what the company was thinking when they went this route. It starts off with Jim Wicks talking about how his daughter was so sad that she dropped her phone and it shattered. The team at Motorola then decided that this was something they needed to conquer. And they talked with consumers to see how important a shatter proof display would really be to them. And, as you’d expect, it was a big deal. They go on to explain exactly what goes into ShatterShield. Which has five layers as well as a flexible AMOLED panel.
The second video from Motorola shows them dropping all kinds of phones. You can see Sony, Apple, Samsung and other smartphones being dropped and shattered. They give some statistics about users using shattered displays throughout the short commercial. And at the end, the Droid Turbo 2 is dropped and nothing happens. Because, well it’s a shatter proof display. So everything stays in-tact, as you’d expect. You can watch both videos down below.
Motorola and Verizon will begin selling the Droid Turbo 2 in stores and online on October 29th. The Droid Turbo 2 will cost $26 per month for the 32GB version and $30 per month for the 64GB version. They also both get Moto Maker customization. With ballistic nylon, leather and other materials. Safe to say, this is the most customizable Droid yet.
