Yesterday it was discovered that Nintendo would be revealing some information about their first upcoming mobile game today, and right on schedule they announced some details earlier this morning during a briefing for investors. Nintendo first officially announced that they would be entering into the mobile gaming space earlier this year in a partnership with mobile game developer DeNA, although at the time they didn’t have specific details to share about the games and what they would be, just that they would include memorable franchises. As of this morning Nintendo has stated their first official mobile game will be coming out sometime in 2016 and will be called Miitomo, a free-to-play title that will allow players to create their own Mii characters and interact with others.
While the actual gameplay hasn’t been announced yet, the screenshots suggest it might be similar to that of a tomagachi like game where you’ll create your Mii avatar with the type of customization options you’d have on the Nintendo Wii consoles, and presumably need to take care of it and keep your Mii happy, while also being able to communicate and interact with the Mii avatars of other players. While there should be a handful of options to personalize your Mii creations from the get-go, Miitomo will come with optional in-app purchases for things like new character customization options so you’ll be able to expand upon it if you wish.
Miitomo is to be the first of a total of five mobile games as part of the DeNA partnership all of which are planned for a release by 2017, with the others that have yet to be announced planned to take on the form of a paid game instead of Nintendo utilizing the F2P platform. Nintendo plans to start promoting Miitomo officially after the holidays, so there will be more details about it sometime after the next couple of months. Nintendo also stated that Miitomo and it’s other upcoming mobile titles will share data over the cloud with Nintendo’s consoles, so those who own a Nintendo console system will likely be getting some extra perks in game on either end, although it’s also unclear what those might be.
