Report: Android 66.9% U.S. Market Share End of August, iOS Slips

Every so often, a report comes through detailing the scope of the Android smartphone industry or the wider mobile industry in general. These reports come through monthly, others quarterly and some yearly, The last one arrived only a few days ago from Google and detailing that Android 5.x (Lollipop) had managed to increase its operating system distribution to 23.5-percent. This was then followed by the latest report from comScore which showed Android noting a slight drop in its operating system market share between May and August. Now, the latest report from Kantar WorldPanel ComTech has been released and it makes for some interesting reading. Especially on the operating system distribution in the U.S. as it refers to the same period as the comScore report.

The report details the three month period leading up to the end of August 2015 and in the U.S., the report highlights that iOS saw its market share of sales drop to the lowest level since August of last year. However, that was not thought to be a result of Android dominating, but instead the calm before the storm that was the iPhone 6 launch. As such, those months highlighted that users were holding on to try and see what was coming with the iPhone 6 and 6S. In terms of Samsung, the report highlights that the company saw an increase in their quarterly market in the U.S. Albeit not a significant one. The report details that 29% of the Samsung base upgraded their devices in the three month period with only 4-percent of those upgrading to a Galaxy S6, 1-percent upgrading to a Galaxy S6 Edge and 23-percent of those upgrading to a Galaxy S5.

In terms of the smartphone sales market share, the report details that in the U.S. in the three months ending August 2015, Android secured an overall 66.9-percent share of the market. This saw Apple’s share drop to 28.4-percent, Windows secured 3.5-percent and BlackBerry occupying 0.5-percent.
