Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 is reportedly receiving an OTA (Over the Air) update in Europe, as of this Thursday. The update is believed to be a minor one, and doesn’t come with any new feature from the looks of it. The download is 144 MB in size, and according to the official changelog released by the company, it brings along improvements in battery life through some optimizations that Samsung says it has carried out as part of the latest firmware. The update is also believed to bring stability to phone calls and enhances the security of the device. The one important point to note is that installing this update will prevent users from downgrading to the currently-installed build version, apparently because of security issues.
The Galaxy Note 5 from Samsung is the company’s latest flagship phablet, and was launched earlier this year at its ‘Unpacked’ event in New York City, along with the Galaxy S6 Edge+. The device is expected to receive the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update early next year, having been launched with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop with Samsung’s proprietary TouchWiz interface laid on top. Marshmallow itself is expected to bring along further improvements to the battery life as well as enhanced security, including full disk encryption, to devices running the software. The features are already available in devices like the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, both of which come out of the box with Android Marshmallow.
Taking a quick look at some of the hardware specs of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, the phablet is the fifth generation premium phablet from Samsung, and features a 5.7-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) Super AMOLED display. The smartphone is powered by Samsung’s own Exynos 7420 chipset, which comes with an octa-core processor clocked at a maximum of 2.1 GHz. The phablet comes with 4 GB of RAM and a choice of either 32 or 64 GB of storage, with a 128 GB version also said to be in the pipelines for a possible future release. The handset carries a 3,000 mAh battery, supports wireless charging and sports a fingerprint scanner. Imaging options include a 16-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera. The device also runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop as mentioned already.
