Samsung has developed some of the processors integrated into their products for a while. They were typically included in some regional versions while the versions that would be sold around the globe would use one of Qualcomm’s offerings. This strategy changed this year, as every version of their flagships included the Exynos 7420 processor made by Samsung and providing very good results. One of the possible reasons to make this change is that the company wanted to show the rest of the companies the capabilities of their processors, so that they would consider using Exynos processors in their future products. While there have been rumors that Samsung might use the Snapdragon 820 in some versions of their next flagship, the company is still developing their own processors.
The results of one particular processor have been leaked in some benchmark tests, with some impressive results. It’s supposed to have some custom-made cores called Mongoose and it was known as Exynos M1 though recent rumors suggest that the name of the final product will be Exynos 8890. Now, a new leak found on China’s social network Weibo suggests that Samsung is developing their processors with a new technology called Heterogeneous System Architecture (HSA). This is a new CPU architecture that integrates the GPU and CPU modules in a single bus in order to share the same tasks and memory. Samsung is part of the HSA Foundation, which is developing this new standard.
A leaked roadmap for Exynos processors shows that Samsung will use HSA in their future processors, though it will be featured first combining it with a Mali GPU, in the coming years, Samsung will develop their own GPU so that HSA could be used with this new graphics unit. This information is still considered a rumor, as the company was supposed to release their own GPU by now, but it’s nowhere to be found or any official claim about it. It is also unknown if the development of this technology will be ready for the rumored Exynos 8890, but if the rumor turns out to be true, we could see a couple of iterations before Samsung manages to build the entirety of their processors.
