Since Snapseed was bought by Google in September of 2012, Google has continued to improve the app, and add even more features. Including this latest update which brings RAW Photo Editing to the app. For many, Snapseed is their photo editing app of choice. It’s free, and has extensive features to make your photos even better, as well as being able to add all sorts of filters and frames. Not to mention the usual editing of cropping, adjusting the brightness, saturation, contrast and more. It’s a really easy to use photo editor, and it’s great to see that Google didn’t just absorb it into Google Photos.
Version 2.1 of the Snapseed app is rolling out to Android devices. Of course we have the usual bug fixes and stability improvements. But the big feature is RAW Photo Edition. For those that don’t know, RAW is the picture that your camera captures before any editing or compression takes place. This means that every detail is still in place. This is great for recovering things like blown out objects in your picture. Many photographers like to take photos in RAW format as they can get all the details in their photo and then edit it to their hearts delight. In the past couple of years, smartphones have started adding RAW capabilities to their cameras. When you do shoot in RAW, it does take up a lot more space, compared to it being compressed into jpeg.
Now without taking these photos to a computer, you can edit them right on your smartphone with Snapseed and also post them on Google+, Facebook and many other websites. Snapseed has also added some polish to the navigation of the app. It’s looking like it’s a pretty good update to check out. And you can find it now on the Google Play Store. Since this is a Google app, it could indeed by a staged rollout, so if you don’t have the v2.1 update just yet, hang tight and it should be rolling out pretty soon.
With smartphones really having some amazing cameras as of late, being able to take pictures in RAW format and now edit them on your phone is definitely a big deal.
