Sony is an international company. This tech giant has been around for a long, long time, and pretty much everyone has heard of that. That being said, Sony dabbles in pretty much everything tech related, from TVs and stereos, to smartphones and smartwatches. The company’s camera image sensors and gaming divisions are bringing in most profit to the company, while Sony Mobile has been slacking in that regard for a long time now. Sony has released a ton of Android-powered smartphones to date, but their sales aren’t nearly where they’re supposed to be.
Sony Mobile has been losing money for a long time now. There are many reasons why that may be, from constantly releasing similar-looking devices, to not properly marketing them. Some people think that their devices are more expensive than the competition, especially their mid-range offerings. We’ll let you be the judge of that, but something’s definitely not right. The company has released three new devices during IFA in Berlin last month, their flagship Xperia Z5 devices. Sony has showcased the Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Premium and Xperia Z5 Compact. The Xperia Z5 Premium is the first 4K smartphone ever released, and that’s definitely something Sony has going for them, and something that can be used for marketing. Same goes for the 23-megapixel snapper available on the back of these devices, which is ranked as the best smartphone camera by DxOMark.
That being said, it seems like Sony is fed up with losing cash as well. The company’s CEO, Kazuo Hirai, has said that they will consider their options if Sony Mobile fails to turn a profit in the next business year. This means that Sony Mobile doesn’t really have a lot of time to turn things around. Kazuo Hirai did not specifically say that Sony will stop making smartphones, not at all, but who knows what might happen. It is also worth mentioning that Sony lowered their forecast for mobile communications unit to an operating loss of 60 billion yen back in April. Either way, it will be interesting to see what happens here, and if Sony Mobile can turn things around in the coming months.
