You have probably never heard of it, but YEZZ is a small phone manufacturer based in Miami, and they have just launched an interesting new set of Android smartphones that come packed with a Google VR Cardboard out of the box. Until a few years ago, Virtual Reality was far from being accessible to the everyday user. However, the landscape is changing fast with big companies investing heavy on VR technology, mainly coupled with mobile devices. Although you can get a Gear VR from Samsung and other upcoming devices, Google offers an extremely cheap option with the Cardboard combining a cardboard mount with your smartphone and a special software.
As for the phones, they offer low to mid-range specs. The Andy 5.5VR features a 5.5-inch screen with HD resolution and is powered by a quad-core MT6735 MediaTek processor running at 1.3 GHz, 4G connectivity, 13 megapixels rear camera and 5MP front shooter. There’s also the less powerful Andy 5VR on a 5-inch screen with a resolution of 854 x 480 and cameras with 8 megapixels and 2MP in the rear and front, respectively. The processor is the MT6580 also from MediaTek, and it doesn’t offer 4G connectivity. Both devices have 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal memory, which can be expanded further up to 64 GB via a microSD card. As for the software, Android 5.1 Lollipop runs the show. The devices are branded as “VR Ready” and as such, they come with a special 360-degree video player to be used with the Cardboard, which comes for free and is called YEZZ VR360. The Cardboard set is interesting and in order to use it, you inserting your phone inside the “device” while running dedicated apps.
Although the fact that these phones come with VR out of the box is pretty interesting, the low resolution for the Andy 5VR may be an issue, since the main aspect of a virtual reality device is to immerse the user. As such, you would need a higher resolution screen for it to be pleasing, so, the 5.5-inch version is probably the best option. There’s no release date yet, but the phones should go on sale late this year, with prices ranging from $99 to $249.
